The honest answer is more useful than the marketing version: wood earrings made from domestic hardwoods are not a common allergen, but the ear wire matters as much as the wood does. Wood contains no nickel. A solid hardwood earring body eliminates the primary allergen entirely. The catch is the hardware — if the ear wire (the part that passes through the piercing) is made from nickel-containing metal, the wood body doesn't help. For genuinely sensitive ears, the complete setup is a hardwood body paired with a titanium, surgical steel, or 14k+ gold wire.
"Hypoallergenic" has no legal or clinical definition in the US. No FDA standard governs its use for jewelry. So when a product is labeled hypoallergenic, it's a marketing claim, not a certification. That applies to wood earrings and everything else.
What's actually verifiable:
Wood allergies from jewelry are rare, and species-specific. A 2025 epidemiological study of woodworkers found that sensitization to commercial wood products typically requires direct, intensive, and prolonged skin contact (PMC12793820). For jewelry specifically, documented cases in the Contact Dermatitis literature involve exotic tropical hardwoods — cocobolo, Brazilian rosewood, East Indian rosewood, teak — which contain quinones and phenolic resins that domestic species don't share (ScienceDirect, 1997). Maple, cherry, and walnut, which are the common choices for earrings sold in the US, are not associated with contact sensitization in the literature.
That doesn't mean zero risk. Anyone can be sensitive to any material. If you try a new pair and notice redness, itching, or swelling in the 24–48 hours after wearing, stop and give it time. The more likely culprit in most cases is the hardware, not the wood — so if the skin reaction is localized to the piercing site, start there.
The practical framing: Wood earrings made from domestic hardwoods (maple, cherry, walnut) with nickel-free hardware are a reasonable option for nickel-sensitive ears. They are not "hypoallergenic" in any certified sense, but the sensitization risk from the wood itself is documented as low.

Finish (sealed vs. raw). A sealed earring — one that's been oiled, waxed, or lacquered after cutting — handles skin contact and occasional moisture far better than raw wood. Look for a maker who describes their finishing process; if the listing says nothing about finish, assume raw.
Hardware. The ear wire or post is the part in contact with the piercing. For sensitive ears, the wood body is secondary — you need nickel-free hardware. Titanium and 14k+ gold are the strongest options; surgical-grade stainless steel (316L) is a step down but acceptable for most people. Avoid silver-plated, gold-plated, or alloy wires with no grade specified.
Wood thickness and grain direction. Thin wood earrings (under 3 mm) are lighter and more delicate; thicker cuts are more durable but heavier. Grain direction matters for structural strength in narrow pieces — a cut running against the grain through a thin section is a stress point. Each wet-dry cycle stresses the finish interface until it cracks. Even sealed earrings should stay dry — the seal slows absorption but doesn't block it. If they do get wet: dry immediately with a soft cloth, air-dry at room temperature (no hair dryer), then re-oil with food-safe mineral oil or beeswax.
