Wood earrings and showers don't mix — and the reason is more specific than 'wood doesn't like water.' Here's what actually happens and how to recover if they get wet.
The short answer: no, take them off before you get in the shower. The longer answer explains the mechanism — which matters because it tells you how careful to be and what to do if you forget.
Wood earrings are not waterproof. Sealed hardwood earrings are water-resistant, at best. That distinction changes how you think about care.

According to the USDA Forest Products Laboratory's Wood Handbook — the standard technical reference for wood properties — hardwoods at typical indoor conditions (roughly 70°F, 50% relative humidity) reach an equilibrium moisture content of about 8–9%. Under sustained water exposure, moisture content can climb to 25% or higher, depending on the wood species and finish.
At that point, the wood swells dimensionally. Different wood species swell at different rates — denser hardwoods like hard maple, cherry, and walnut swell less per unit of moisture absorbed than softer woods, which is one reason they're preferred for earrings and jewelry. But they all swell.
The real damage isn't the wet state. It's the cycle.
As the earrings dry, the wood contracts. The sealant — oil, wax, or lacquer — has to flex with those dimensional changes. Over enough wet-dry cycles, the sealant fatigues and develops micro-cracks. Once the seal is compromised, moisture reaches the bare wood faster on each subsequent wet exposure. Eventually the wood itself develops cracks, usually at the thinnest edges or across the grain where stress concentrates.
From working with these materials directly: the failure usually starts at the edges of a laser-cut piece — thin sections where the wood grain runs cross-wise to the cut line. You'll see it as a subtle lightening or separation at the edge before any visible crack appears.
One shower is usually not catastrophic for a sealed hardwood pair — it depends on how quickly you dry them. A quality oil or wax sealant slows moisture absorption enough that a brief single exposure, dried promptly, won't cause structural damage. This is what happens in practice: you notice at the end of the shower, you dry them off, and they look fine.
Repeated showers without re-sealing are a different matter. After several wet-dry cycles, you'll notice:
What won't happen: the personalization won't wash off. Laser engraving removes wood fibers rather than applying anything to the surface — there's nothing to dissolve or peel. The risk from water is to the finish and the wood's structural integrity, not to the engraving itself.
Recovery sequence:
If the finish is already cracking or pulling away, re-oiling helps the wood stay conditioned but won't fully repair the sealant. The earrings are still wearable at that point — just handle them more carefully around moisture going forward.
No — sealed means water-resistant, not waterproof. An oil or wax sealant slows how quickly moisture penetrates the wood surface; it doesn't create a complete barrier. Under shower exposure — sustained running water — enough moisture gets through over time to initiate the expansion-contraction cycle that damages the finish. Think of the seal as a buffer, not a block.
The same mechanism applies, more aggressively. Pool water contains chlorine (which is harsher on wood finishes than plain water), and ocean water contains salt that accelerates drying and surface degradation. If you swim wearing them, dry and re-oil immediately. One pool session won't cause catastrophic damage; regular swimming will.
Brief hand-washing is lower risk than a shower — the exposure is shorter and you're not fully soaking the earrings. Dish washing is riskier: dish soap can strip wood finishes over time, and the prolonged warm-water exposure adds up. The safe habit is to remove them before washing dishes and re-oil the earrings monthly under regular wear.
Every few months under normal wear — or immediately after any significant water exposure. Signs you're overdue: the wood looks dull or dry, the finish has subtle cracking at edges, or the engraved areas look lighter than they used to. The re-oiling process takes about 30 minutes and brings the finish back significantly even when it's been neglected.
Species and finish quality both matter. Denser hardwoods (hard maple, cherry, walnut) are more dimensionally stable than softwoods — they swell less per unit of moisture absorbed and contract more slowly when drying. A quality sealed pair from a maker who finishes before shipping is more water-resistant than raw or minimally-finished wood. But none are waterproof, and none should be showered in routinely.
